Midnight Margaritas is inspired by Practical Magic. As most Millennials who are currently on a spiritual journey can probably attest, Practical Magic (and a large heaping of The Craft) were really foundational to me. What I think is the most striking part of Practical Magic is its emphasis on love in relationships that aren’t strictly romantic. There is love from the aunts to Sally and Gillian, there is the sisters’ love for one another, and there is Sally's love for her daughters.

I came up with the concept of Midnight Margaritas came up with my own sister. I am no longer in contact with one of my sisters, but my other sister, Maggie, pretty much walked out of my mom’s womb and then became my best friend. I remember talking to her outside of The Next Chapter in Huntington about fragrances for the Spring/Summer 2025 collection and highlighting that I wanted something clean, fun, and witchy, where coconuts could fit. One of us started singing, “Put the lime in the coconut.” And almost in unison, we said, “Midnight Margaritas!”

I knew exactly what it would be: lavender for luck, rosemary for your garden gate, salt for our left shoulder, and, of course, lime and coconut. All of those things, fortunately, made it to the final version, but it took many, many different formulations to get everything perfect. One of the initial issues I had with Midnight Margaritas was that coconut, which was essential, and lavender, which was also essential, didn’t really work together. They are so different, and both of them have this aspect of trying to help with good intentions and shitty execution. I needed to find a way for them to work together.

I think of this with Maggie as well. We are two very different people. I pretty much have to always be working: be it growing this business, cleaning my house, or paying off my debts to a capitalist tanooki on my Animal Crossing island. I don’t have kids, don’t want kids, but will gladly hand over money for Girl Scout cookies (the lemon-ups are the best, and I will die on that hill). Maggie is a lot more laid back, often in pajamas more than dress pants, and she has 3 small cherubs she has deemed her offspring that love her cuddles. We are like coconut and lavender, or Sally and Gillian, two very different things, but once you bring them together, it’s beautiful.
